Honouring Geoff

Middle aged Geoff

A Quiet Life, A Gentle Soul, and the Importance of Planning

Yesterday marked what would have been Arthur “Geoff” M’s 85th birthday. As I sat with Curae Lawyers signing the affidavit to apply for probate, I couldn’t help but reflect on the journey we walked with him—a journey that began by chance but ended with deep meaning.

Young GeoffGeoff was referred to us by the Social Workers at Osborne Park Hospital after he suffered a fall at home and was unable to move for almost a full day. The hospital team felt he would benefit from transitioning into aged care, and that’s when I stepped in as his Senior Move Manager.

From the beginning, it was clear Geoff lived a quiet, solitary life. He never married, rarely socialised, and had no Enduring Power of Attorney, Guardianship, Advance Health Directive or Will in place. These are crucial documents for anyone, but especially for older adults navigating the complexities of aged care.

We began supporting him through our Journey Plan—decluttering and clearing his Department of Communities apartment, preparing the space for handover, and assisting him in finding a suitable aged care placement. But life took an unexpected turn. Geoff received a diagnosis of tongue cancer and was moved into palliative care, where he declined rapidly. I last spent time with him just 12 hours before he passed.

With no friends or family to step forward, we completed all final steps to close his tenancy and ensure his home could be passed on to someone in need. We arranged his cremation and kept his ashes safe with us while we searched tirelessly for any remaining relatives and progressed probate on his behalf.

I am grateful to say that, with the help of Family Wise UK and Curae Lawyers, we finally located three cousins in their late 60s and 70s—family who may not have known him well, but who now have the opportunity to honour his legacy once the court process concludes.

Geoff’s story is a gentle reminder of why planning matters, but also why compassion and advocacy are so essential for those who journey through life quietly. It was a privilege to support him, and as we continue to “walk’ with him till his final resting place –  his memory stays with us.
